What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

By: Steve Armstrong

Although premature ejaculation is a common male sexual problem that has been around for generations, medical science still can't tell us with absolute certainty what causes premature ejaculation.

There was a time when the so-called experts strongly believed that premature ejaculation was the result of some deep-seated psychological problems lurking in the minds of men and affecting their sexual performance. That idea has since been junked. Today, the prevailing belief is that premature ejaculation is caused by both biological and psychological factors.

The problem is, medicine has not yet reached that state where they can identify with precision what exactly causes premature ejaculation for a specific individual. As a result, treatments for premature ejaculation have adapted a shotgun approach that addresses both biological and psychological factors.

There is also a growing belief that erectile dysfunction plays are large role in many men's struggles with premature ejaculation.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. These days, no many has to suffer. There are successful treatments around to cure the complaint which include counseling, medicine and exercises that provide much better control for the man over his orgasm. In most cases, a sufferer will find the best thing is to combine at least two of these techniques for best results.

What follows is an explanation of the tell tale signs, symptoms, causes and risks that all cause the condition. This can be used to assess your own problems - either current or potential.

Signs and symptoms We don't know for sure how long it should take for a normal man to reach orgasm, so there is no accepted version of what is normal Most experts are in agreement of the definition of the problem - that is premature ejaculation is defined as when a man reaches ejaculation before he wants to, during most of his sexual encounters. Thsi may be either during masturbation or through a sexual encounter. Experts have divided premature ejaculation in to two types:

1.Primary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have been suffering from premature ejaculation ever since you started having sexual encounters.

2.Secondary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have been suffering from premature ejaculation only after you enjoyed previously satisfying sexual encounters without such problems.

Causes While the experts have ruled out psychological factors as the sole reason for premature ejaculation, they have not yet reached the point where they can diagnose a specific cause for each individual. Despite this, there have been significant degrees of success achieved in addressing both the biological and psychological factors that cause premature ejaculation. There are four basic psychological causes that can bring about premature ejaculation. These are:

1. Instances when the man had to rush to reach orgasm as he didn't want to be caught int he act by another person.

2. Where a man has rushed his sexual encounters due to strong feelings of guilt.

3. Men who have erection problems and are concerned about whether they can stay erect throug the sexual encounter. This may also establish a pattern where a man hurries to ejaculate while he still has an erection.

4. Men who suffer with anxiety, especially with regard to sexual performance or other matters.

In addition, there are also six basic biological causes that can lead to premature ejaculation. These are:

1.Hormone that is abnormal

2.Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals)

3.Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system

4.Some thyroid problems

5.Infection and inflammation of the urethra or prostate

6.Inherited traits

Some doctors believe that lifelong Primary Premature Ejaculation is usually a result of biological causes.

In addition, some other rare causes of premature ejaculation can include the following:

1.Damage caused to the nervous system by trauma or surgery

2.Withdrawal from drugs such as narcotics or trifluoperazine, a treatment for anxiety and other mental disorders.

Risk Factors Finally, the risk of premature ejaculation can be increased due to some factors. These include:

1.Impotence -- Having erectile problems may lead to premature ejaculation. By some estimates, one of three men suffering from premature ejaculation also have impotence problems.

2.Health problems -- Medical conditions that make men feel anxious about sex, such as heart disorders, often compel men to rush through sex.

3.Stress -- Feeling stressed about areas of your life can stop you relaxing and result in premature ejaculation.

4.Medications -- There are some drugs that can naturally cause premature ejaculation.
