Understanding Carry On Luggage Restrictions And Travel Rules

By: Grace Jennings

Travel has changed dramatically over the past few years. Even if you're a regular business traveler it's important to keep up with the ever-changing airport rules and regulations. Be sure you understand them before you even leave home.

A welcome change for the business traveler is now available at most of the major airports. Security checkpoints are commonly available for frequent business fliers to reduce some of the time involved with the process. Call your airport for details to see if it's offered. Many people have found without this option they would have missed their flight and business appointment.

What Are The Rules On Electronic Devices?

When you take advantage of the fast lane at the airport, be sure to remove your laptop computer promptly from its carrying case and put it by itself into a screening bin right away. You'll also be allowed to carry on or check camcorders, cell phones, pagers, cameras and similar electronic items although once on board the plane there may be restrictions on their use.

If you are traveling with camera equipment and film, be sure to carry it on the plane and ask the screening attendant for special handling. X-ray equipment used for security may cause damage to undeveloped film present in a camera so be sure to take this special precaution.

Traveling With Sporting Equipment & Accessories

One of the best things about business travel is you'll often get to play at different golf courses or give your client the opportunity to beat you in a tennis match. Not only are these activities great for your business success, they also keep you in shape while you're away from your normal routine.

Keep in mind that while you can travel with most sporting equipment, you'll usually need to include it in you checked baggage. Baseball bats, golf clubs, pool cues, ski poles, etc. need to be checked. However, you will be able to bring golf balls, basketballs and other small items on the plane with you.

Rules Regarding Personal Items

Those on business trips tend to carry more personal items than other travelers since they're away from home for extended periods for work. Because they're often gone for longer periods of time they need to have everything needed for the duration of the trip.

As long as your personal items are in containers no larger than 3 ounces, you'll be able to check or carry them on. Examples include: aerosol bottles and cans, lotions, creams, bath gel, bug repellant, eye drops, mouthwash and so on. If in double about objects with sharp edges, it's best to either check or leave them at home.
