The Way to Go - Insure your Dog!

By: Rebecca Foxton

Think about how much your pet enriches your life with its sweet ways of showing you it cares, and all its funny tricks. But pets are for life, and like a marriage in sickness and in health, your pet could get sick and that could be slightly less fun for your pocket.

Of course if your pet pal gets sick, you as a responsible owner would see to it that your animal receives the medical help it needs. Just think a random bite to your dog or cat could end up in bills beyond your biggest nightmares!

So why don't you get some pet insurance - after all it could end up SAVING you a small fortune, and just think what you could spend that saved money on.... And here's another sobering thought but another reason to get insurance - did you know you would have to pay for healthcare for someone your dog bit?

The pet insurance industry is small in the USA, and Embrace Pet Insurance, like all other US-based companies, permits the owner to choose the clinic of their preference and some even insure you abroad!

Flexibility, quality and affordability are key to the Embrace Pet insurance policy. You aren't pigeonholed into Type 1, 2 or 3, you make those all-important choices about the level of cover you want for your pet.

In addition many insurers only cover standard issues such as non-elective surgery, anesthesia, blood tests, hospitalization, medication prescribed by a vet and visits to the clinic.

However there is a whole range of things basic insurance does not cover you for i.e. vaccinations, chronic and genetic diseases ( and boy, these can be costly) and if you are a fan of complementary therapies, you might as well forget it with most of the policies available.

That's what makes Embrace a bit different, as they want to give a really top notch service. Pet insurance enjoys a booming popularity in the UK with 20% of pets insured, compared to less than one per cent in the USA, for the plain reason that they see it's worth the investment. Pets get better care, so vets want to recommend it and owners save heaps of money, it's a win-win-win scenario.

Think about it, if you have insured your pet and he gets a bit sick, you know that bill will be mostly covered, so you would take him to see the vet, and would not ignore it hoping it went away. Can't you see how much better it is for your pet to be insured?

Insurance companies often get a bad rep for screwing their clients out of money, but Embrace is a bit different. For example most companies will make the consumer take out routine care ( eg covering annual clinic visits, immunizations, neutering and so on) but Embrace prefer the client pays for these type of procedures out of their own pocket.

Embrace knows that the increase in premium to cover these things would not in fact be less than paying for them yourself, so they actually advise against getting routine care insurance, although they fully recommend routine care!

Some points to muse over though; if your pet has a pre-existing condition, it is not a good bet that it will be insured. Plus you have to wait for a designated period before you can claim for illness or injury. When your dog gets hit by a car it's a bit too late to think insurance is a good idea, but some people think that way!

You love your home, so you insure it to keep it safe, you love your pet, so isn't pet insurance a good idea too? People always think it won't happen to them or their pet, but then get caught out with some tough decisions over life or death treatment. That isn't a situation you would like to find yourself in, is it?
