Six Tips for Teaching Children To Write

By: Zacharias Allred

Learning to write is very important today. The internet is setting the pace in this new information age and writing is one of the best ways to communicate online and in many other settings. Your children learn to write by writing so you need to create a writing atmosphere in your home. Here are 6 tips to help you get started.
1. Need to inspire. Writing is such an enjoyable activity so get your children enthusiastic about it. You may have old letters or even a journal. Demonstrate to your kids how writing down your thoughts makes them timeless.
2. Writing competition. Something you can try is a writing competition. I did this with my own children and it was great. I had each of them write a 400 word article on any subject they chose. You can try this and give them any reward you feel is appropriate for the best one.
3. Start a blog. Blogs have become extremely popular and you could use it as a family journal. Your children could write articles and then they could let their friends know about the blog as a way to show off their work. You could even give your readers an opportunity to make comments about the different articles and vote for the best one.
4. Give your children a notebook. A notebook is a necessity for any good writer so they can quickly jot down ideas as they come. They can also start composing stories in their notebooks that can later be transferred to the computer.
5. Thank you notes. When your children receive presents from each other, friends and family, consider including a box of thank you notes around the Christmas tree. This will be another opportunity for them to write and will be very meaningful to those who gave the gift.
6. Mail letters. Writing letters may seem old fashioned with the invention of email but it is still a treasured form of communication. Letters can be stored and reread many times. Grandparents and many others are not familiar with email and you know they would completely enjoy receiving a letter from your children.
Teaching children to write when there are so many other activities can be challenging. First you need to inspire your children by showing them how fun writing can be. Next you can teach your kids fun activities like thank you notes, blogs and writing letters that make writing exciting.
