Prop 102

By: Seth Mcaffe

While it is acceptable for all people to construct and harbor their own beliefs in regards to Prop 102, there still seems to be some confusion and misunderstanding about the actual intent of the proposition. With this in mind, we encourage all residents of Arizona to base their opinions on the facts and cast their vote according this November.
While Prop 102 does seek to clearly define marriage as being the union between a man and woman it does not seek to deny benefits to any individual, couple or group. This has been a major point of confusion for many people, but it should be pointed out that by defining the term "marriage" as the union between a man and woman Prop 102 does not prevent any individual from living the way they choose to live. Moreover, Prop 102 does not seek to limit anybody's benefits or rights. The fact is the proposition has nothing to do with rights in any way.
Prop 102 only aims at passing an absolute definition of the word "marriage," any other purpose or intention assigned to the proposition is done at the error of the assigner. Prop 102 is only 20 words long and strictly regards the definition of marriage? nothing more.
Prop 102 states: "Only the union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state." The proposition is for the sole purpose of maintaining traditional marriage and in no way seeks to limit the rights of any persons.
Prop 102 has often been compared to Prop 107, a proposition that failed to pass in 2006. While the propositions are similar to each other, there are still some very definitive differences. In 2006, Proposition 107 included a phrase that read; "No legal status for unmarried persons shall be created or recognized by this state or its political subdivisions that is similar to that of marriage." Opposition of the proposition considered the preceding phrase to be an attempt to restrict domestic partner benefits of unwed individuals. Prop 102 is different because it seeks only to define marriage as the union between one man and one woman. Furthermore, it has absolutely no ties to domestic partner benefits.
It is commonly believed by many individuals that the supporters of Prop 102 are limited to conservative groups and religious enthusiasts. This could not be further from the truth. Proponents of Prop 102 include individuals from all cultures, religions, political sides and walks of life.
Prop 102 is not liberal vs. conservative issue, or republican vs. democrat issue. It's about maintaining the traditional definition of marriage. And that's all it is. The proposition doesn't seek to deny rights or prevent freedoms for any individual or group.
