Pheromones: How Effective Are They?

By: Pamella Neely

You may have heard of pheromones, but if you are otherwise at sea as far as they are concerned, read on. Pheromones are chemicals found in insects, animals, and humans that initiate a response from the opposite sex. The question "Do human pheromones work?" is continually asked. To date, the answers to this question are wide-ranging and diverse.
Scientists and researchers do not know exactly how, or to what degree, the human pheromone works. Many contend that humans cannot sense pheromones, therefore they are of negligible significance as far as human sexuality is concerned. However, other researchers argue that there is a miniscule sensory organ in our nasal cavity called VNO (Vomeronasal Organ) that can identify sexual attraction between two individuals.
Human pheromone studies have been conducted many times. Pheromone colognes have been developed that claim to make a person sexually irresistible to the opposite sex. There are even commercials that advertise pheromone cologne for men. The overall ratings of these colognes varies considerably. Some people truly believe that pheromone colognes work, while others say that they do not.
Some scientists are of the opinion that human pheromones are released through sweat. How do human pheromones get into colognes, then? These types of colognes use synthetic forms of pheromones. This, of course, triggers a whole new debate about how these colognes can be as effective as they claim to be.
If you use pheromone colognes, will you be able to attract members of the opposite sex more readily? Unfortunately, the answer is most likely no. Pheromone colognes will not obtain more dates for you. They could, however, mimic human pheromones closely enough to get members of the opposite sex interested enough to talk to you.
Perfumes that contain pheromones might possibly enhance your appeal, particularly if you are a woman. You should not expect too much, however, if you decide to use pheromone-enhanced perfumes or cologne. They may have some positive effect on other humans, but there is no clear evidence of this.
Do pheromones actually work? One way to find out! All you have to do is purchase pheromone cologne and conduct your own little experiment.
