Avoiding Travel Headaches - Ways To Identify Your Luggage

By: Grace Jennings

In order to get the most enjoyment when you travel, consider planning ahead for ways to identify your luggage once you reach your destination. Keeping track of your bags at the airport, train station or at the cruise ship dock is an important component of a successful travel experience.

It can be difficult to sort your baggage from the rest of the travelers since so many luggage sets and suitcases are virtually identical in style, size and color. Just look around the next time you're waiting at the airport baggage carousel and count how many black canvas bags you see. It would be pretty easy to mistake someone else's bag for your own or vice versa, especially when everyone's in a hurry to get on with their trip.

If you are in the market to purchase new luggage, consider getting something a bit offbeat. While it's impossible to be completely unique unless you have a custom design, you can move away from the standard black or brown bags most people gravitate toward. For the more creative types perhaps bold patterns or bright colors will do the trick. Of course, this strategy isn't for everyone.

Making A Statement And Finding Your Bags

One way you can make your luggage stand out is to tie a ribbon or scarf which is brightly colored or features a distinctive pattern. This, of course can work against you if others on your flight had the same idea. Always double check your luggage tags, even if you think no one else could possibly have a neon green ribbon on their suitcase.

There is a problem with this method though - ribbons and scarves can get caught in conveyor belts and the like during handling, which may cause delays. Also, they can come off during this process. You should always include a tag with all of your contact information, whether or not you have a unique tie on your luggage.

Additionally, you should put your contact information inside each bag. If your luggage is lost or switched with that of another traveler, this can help your bags find their way back to you. And if your luggage tags should somehow come off in transit, you can then prove your ownership of your luggage to airport personnel.

Personalized luggage tags are something which an increasing number of travelers are considering to make sure their bags don't get lost. There are a lot of options available for design and color making it much less likely that any other traveler will have exactly the same tags as you. One very popular style is embroidered luggage tags, which feature many different looks to choose from. Look for the most unusual tag possible - after all, ways to identify your luggage are important if you want to spend less time in baggage claim and more on your business trip or vacation.
