An Overview of the Five Elements of Feng Shui

By: Kyle Richey..

While discussing about the age old subject of Feng Shui, the five elements are often mentioned in every context. What are these elements and what is their significance? This article aims to explain the five elements and their application in Fengshui.
The Five Elements of Feng Shui Outlined
The five elements of feng shui are wood, water, earth, metal and fire. These five elements are all naturally occurring and indicate either construction or deconstruction in some way or another:
Construction: Wood creates fire; energy from fire (such as the sun) is needed to feed the earth; metal is borne from the earth; water can be pulled from the elements that make up metal; water feeds the wood.
Annihilation: fire consumes metal; metal in the form of instruments like axe etc demolish Wood; earth nourishes trees or wood; water is absorbed by the dirt in the earth; fire can be completely annihilated by water.
Harmonizing With the Five Feng Shui Elements
The underlying principle of feng shui is that there needs to be harmony and balance; having too much of any one element in your home or in a particular room is counterproductive and can be overwhelming. Most rooms will have one dominant quality of the five elements of feng shui and need another element to bring in some balance. For example, think of an all-white bathroom. White is clean and pure and represents water.
Now an all white room may have a clean look to it, but can also feel cold and unwelcoming. You can balance this cold sterile feel of the room by bringing in another element. Earth is a good choice here and will bring some warmth to the room. Artwork or even accessories such as towels and bathmats in warm earth tones can bring about the desired effect. Take as another example a den which is entirely in earth tones, which can make the room feel somewhat claustrophobic. Fire is a good element to balance out earth here, such as with red or orange accents.
This concept of balance of the five elements in fengshui has a use in every facet of your life. Lets say you have a very strong persona and a fiery nature. Sounds impressive, but then too much of strength can be overwhelming to people around you. For instance a camp fire looks good within confines and an uncontrolled forest fire can be dangerous.
Hence, you can think of toning down your personality, like the warm and giving earth, your persona can do with some warm and nurturing shades to make it more likeable. This can also make you a more objective and a pleasant human being.
There are really no right or wrong answers when it comes to applying the five elements of feng shui to any room of your home or part of your life. You simply need to remember how these elements are meant to harmonize and balance one another, and try to imitate those fine qualities as much as possible.
