Alabama's One of a Kind College

By: Daniel Z. Kane

When you think of states with a wide variety of colleges and universities, Alabama might not be the first state that comes to mind. But, the fact is that Alabama is the home of one of the most unique colleges in the United States.

The mission of U.S.S.A., the United States Sports Academy, located in Daphne, Alabama, is to prepare students for careers in athletics.

The academy focuses on adult learners, offering full time and part time as well as online and on-campus degree options.

USSA offers certificates in eight areas, including sports management, sports coaching, and sports fitness.

Bachelors offerings are in sports coaching, sports management, and sports studies.

The Academy's graduate level offerings include a doctoral program (Ed.D.) in sports management and a master of sports science degree with a choice of five available concentrations (sports coaching, sports management, sports fitness, sports medicine, sport studies).

Not surprisingly, many USSA graduates wind up in college coaching and/or athletic administration. In that group are people like Texas Tech's head football coach, Mike Leach, Western Michigan head basketball coach Steve Hawkins, University of Kentucky assistant basketball coach Jeremy Cox, and University of Texas associate athletics director, Lynn Wheeler.

USSA graduates working in professional sports include Dennis Lindsey, Assistant General Manager of the San Antonio Spurs, and Nashville Predators Director of Hockey Operations Michael Santos.

If you would like to attend a college that puts all its focus on developing and offering programs designed to prepare students for careers in coaching, athletic administration, and other sports related careers, USSA is certainly worth a look.
