Advertising 101: Selling, The Right Way

By: Steve Beck

Today, we'll look at ways that you can increase your online business. Let's start by looking at your own website. Take a look at it now, and try to see it through the eyes of a new visitor. Remember, it doesn't matter that you can build stunning websites online. Your clients don't care about that - they only care about the benefits your product offers.

For now, I want you to read through your web site as a stranger asking only one question: "What's in it for me?" That's what your readers are asking. Now, I could tell you that my new home study course will have 3 CD-ROMs with over 6 hours of video tutorials, a getting started manual, over 8 hours of audio, 120 pages of transcripts, etc.

Chances are, that will all mean nothing to you. All you want to know is, "What will it do for me? How will it help me?"

By asking those questions, consumers are looking for benefits, not features. What happens if I try a different approach? I can teach you how to:

- Find a profitable niche for your website;

- Make $2000 dollars in an Internet business;

- How to upload your website to the Internet

- Choose the right website;

- Register a domain name and find a web host;

- Find new customers every day;

- How to set up a shopping cart

- Recommend other products, and make large commissions doing it;

- How to give your website that professional look

That sounds more appealing, doesn't it? Even then, though, I'm missing the main point of my sales letter. I'm offering good information to my clients, but I'm not telling them how this course will help them.

Take a moment to envision your customer. Ask yourself a few questions:

- How will my audio and video tutorials on building websites help them reach their goals?

-How will listening to audios on the secrets of Internet marketing help them get out of the crushing debt they are facing every day?

- How will listening to these audiotapes, full of Internet marketing secrets, help them reduce their debt?

If you take time to know your customers, you learn what drives them. For example, customers interested in my home study program want to be self-employed. They want to be free from debt, with enough cash to follow their passions. They want a better life for their children, teaching entrepreneurial skills for life long independence. You probably share some of these dreams.

What exactly is the point of studying your customers? How can the information help you to make $2000 dollars in an Internet business? Let me explain.

You may list features on your web page, but you sell benefits. The features of a wedding ebook are that it is 67 pages long, that it contains interviews with caterers, pastors, wedding coordinators, and florists, etc. Or that it comes with a money- back guarantee.The benefits of this wedding e-book are that your wedding will be beautiful, that you will not spend money needlessly, that you will save money, that you will be the envy of all your friends and that your wedding will be as unique as you are!

The next time you're watching TV, pay special attention to the advertising. Car commercials are a great example of this. Auto manufacturers rarely talk about the undercoating, gear ratio, paint job, or other features. Instead, they sell the benefits. The wind in your hair, the exhilaration of speed, the great feeling you get from driving their car.

Do you see the difference? They're selling the feeling of driving the car, not the car itself. Those commercials tickle our fantasy, making us believe that we are richer and better looking when we drive that particular vehicle. Of course it's a fantasy, but for many buyers, that's the benefit. The image is often the thing.

I admit that's an extreme example. But it does illustrate the point I'm trying to make. Your website needs to answer the question, "What do I get out of this? How will this benefit me personally, professionally, or otherwise?"

To succeed with your website, you must answer these questions. Show your clients, with clear examples, exactly how your product or service benefits them. My home study course, for example, helps people develop an income, which in turn helps them quit their dreaded day jobs, pay off debts, and work fewer hours so they can spend time with their families. Through my course, they learn entrepreneurship, skills that they can pass to their children. I help them find the money to pursue their passions, combining work and play. Those are all clear benefits, and my clients can relate to them.

Now that is a concept!
