A Small Arkansas College with Some Big Differences

By: Daniel Z. Kane

Lots of small colleges aspire to be alike. Hendrix, is seems, wants to be different. And, different it is.

In an era when many private colleges in the South are becoming increasingly homogeneous and doctrinaire, Hendrix encourages students to be open to new ideas.

In fact, the College website says, "We believe it's important to challenge conventional wisdom and our own assumptions. If you disagree, if you think some things just shouldn't be questioned, you might not be happy at Hendrix."

Another Hendrix difference is its Odyssey Program, which requires students to choose at least three hands on learning experiences prior to graduation.

Hendrix draws students from 9 countries and nearly 35 states. Minority enrollment is about 12%. Total enrollment is a little under 1,100.

Hendrix brings in able, motivated students. About 3/4 were in the top quarter of their high school graduating class, and the middle 50% earned ACT composite scores between 25 and 31.

It's student to faculty ratio is 11 to 1, and virtually all faculty hold PhD's or equivalent degrees.

Hendrix's endowment, now nearing $200, ensures its fiscal strength and stability.

Hendrix is priced below many comparable institutions. Further good news is the fact that the average Hendrix student receives a financial aid package equivalent to about half the cost of tuition, room, board, and fees.

If being introduced to new kinds of people and new ideas appeals to you, if you like the idea of doing some learning outside of the traditional classroom, and if you want to share small classes with capable, motivated students, you should find out more about Hendrix.
